Marijuana Legalization Supported by Half of All Americans

A new poll by Gallup puts support for marijuana legalization at an all time high, 50% of all Americans.

The Gallup survey shows that support for legalization has steadily increased over the last 4o years. Supporters finally outweigh opponents to outright legalization of marijuana, but resistance is still strong at 46%.

Reform of marijuana possession laws has continued at a steady pace by State legislatures nationwide. PBS/Frontline notes that 16 states have medical marijuana exceptions, and nearly a third of all states have tried some form of marijuana decriminalization. Many states only write civil citations for possession of small quantities of pot, no harsher than a traffic ticket.
